For this Friday’s class, please prepare brief responses to the following questions.  Bring your responses to class (they will be collected), and be prepared to discuss them.

1.   What is English?  Come up with at least three answers to this question.  Try to make your answers as different from each other as you can.

2.   Describe a situation in which you felt embarassment for speaking a particular language, or in which you felt stigmatized or otherwise targeted for speaking that language.  The language could be English, a particular variety of English, or some other language.

3.   Describe a situation in which you felt proud to be a speaker of a particular language.  Again, the language could be English, a particular variety of English, or some other language.

(Note: for (2) and (3), if you have not encountered any such situations, try to find someone who has, such as a family member or close friend, and describe that person’s experience.)
