Reading for Tu 2/9, Th 2/11: Zanuttini 1994

For next week, please read the following paper, which can be downloaded from the “Readings” section of this website:

Zanuttini, Raffaella. 1994. Re-examining negative clauses. In Paths Towards Universal Grammar: Studies in Honor of Richard S. Kayne, G. Cinque et al. (eds), 427-451. Georgetown University Press.

Most likely, we will not get to the reading until Thursday 2/11.  Tuesday’s class (2/9) will be devoted to some residual issues in the syntax of English clauses, as well as an introduction to negative sentences in the Romance languages.  This will provide the necessary background for the Zanuttini paper, which considers the relative position of negation and the main verb across a wide variety of Romance languages.

A quick note on the reading:  Zanuttini uses the labels T and TP where we have been using I and IP.

A longer note on the reading:  while you should certainly read all of the Zanuttini paper, certain sections of it rely on some theoretical assumptions with which you will not be familiar.  Do the best that you can with it, and in Thursday’s lecture, I will highlight those aspects of the paper that are most important for our purposes.  In particular, you should focus on:

(a) the central research questions listed on pg. 428,

(b)  the Romance data presented in section 2 of the paper,

(c) the central features of Zanuttini’s proposal in section 4, and how it accounts for the facts from section 2

Section 3 of the paper should be looked it, since it is referenced in section 4.  But don’t worry too much if the theoretical discussion in this section proves difficult to follow.
