I’ve put together a handout that summarizes today’s discussion about entailment. Â I’ve also included a bit more information about our tests for entailment, including a few helpful tips for applying them. Â In particular, I’ve tried to clarify the uncertainty about when to use but or in fact when applying the tests.
Entailment is a central notion in semantics, and will play a large role in this class. Â Unfortunately, our readings have remarkably little to say about the subject. Â So hopefully this handout will bridge the gap.
(BTW, if you happened to download the handout immediately after class ended, go ahead and re-download this version. Â It contains more detailed information about the tests.)
